Probiotics: Live organisms as feed supplements to fight Salmonella. Billy Hargis has a new way to reduce Salmonella in poultry before they go to the processing plant: use probiotics instead of antibiotics for treatment of the birds.
Recent Awards and Honors:
Jason Emmert, associate professor of poultry science, received the Alumni Society Outstanding Advising Award for 2008. As undergraduate curriculum coordinator in the poultry science department, he promotes a high standard for faculty advisers by example and by his leadership. He coaches the 2008 national champion Poultry Judging Team, teaches a variety of courses and conducts poultry nutrition and management research.
Megan Norton of Lincoln received the Senior Scholar Award, which signifies a 4.0 grade point average with some credit hours from other colleges. A poultry science major with a minor in agricultural business, she was on the UA Poultry Judging Team, is a Poultry Science Club member and has been a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kid's Sake and a Lincoln Lake clean-up project.
Outstanding Students for Poultry Science for 2008 are: Megan Rochelle Norton of Lincoln - Outstanding Senior. Vikrant Dutta of Raleigh, N.C., - Outstanding M.S. Student, and Fausto Solis de los Santos, Outstanding Ph.D. Student.
Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering Yanbin Li of Fayetteville received the John W. White research award. The holder of the Tyson Endowed Chair in Biosensing Engineering, Li developed a biosensor system for rapid, in-field detection of the H5N1 avian influenza "bird flu" virus. He is also a leading scholar in detection of pathogenic bacteria in food products.
Poultry Specialist Susan Watkins of Fayetteville received the John W. White award for extension service at the state level. Watkins provides training and problem solving for poultry producers and industry personnel who work with producers. She has been director of the National Egg Quality School for four years and manages the student internship program for poultry science majors at the University of Arkansas.

Professor Yanbin Li named to Tyson Chair in Biosensing: Dr. Li will hold theTyson Endowed Chair in Biosensing Engineering. Poultry art collection open house took place Wednesday, June 6th,
Melvin and Lorraine Fields Collection on display in Poultry Science Building.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- A dedication and open house for a display of more than 500 rooster figurines and images from around the world took place 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 6th in the Poultry Science Building at the University of Arkansas.
The Melvin and Lorraine Fields Collection includes pieces from designers such as Lalique, Sabino, Hummel, Llandro, Schmidt Company, Baccarat, Limoges and Dresden. The pieces are in crystal, enamel, bronze, teak, gold, silver, porcelain, rose quartz, terra cotta, jade, serpentine, steatite, wood and other materials.
The late Melvin Fields acquired the collection during some 40 years as a poultry company manager and broker in Los Angeles. His wife, Lorraine Fields of Poway, Calif., donated the collection to the University of Arkansas System's Division of Agriculture in his memory.
