DR. PHILIP A. MOORE, JR.
Soil Chemist

Dr. Moore received a B.S. degree in Soil Science from the University of Arkansas in 1978, where he was awarded the Jacob Hartz Scholarship for the Outstanding Soil Science Student. He completed his M.S. in Agronomy at the University of Arkansas in 1981. In 1987, he received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Marine Sciences. While studying at LSU, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Thailand to conduct research on metal chemistry in acid sulfate soils. He was also awarded the Rockefeller Scholarship for Outstanding Marine Science Students. After receiving his Ph.D., he worked in the soil and water science Department at the University of Florida on phosphorus geochemistry in lakes. In 1990 he was hired by the Agronomy Department of the University of Arkansas, where he conducted a research and extension program on rice production.

In 1992, Dr. Moore was hired by the USDA/ARS Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit to investigate best management practices (BMPs) that decrease the negative environmental impacts associated with land application of poultry litter while increasing the agronomic value of litter. His research has focused on BMPs that decrease phosphorus runoff from pastures fertilized with poultry litter. He discovered that alum (aluminum sulfate) addition to litter reduces phosphorus runoff from fields by as much as 87%. Later research showed that alum would reduce ammonia volatilization from poultry litter more effectively than products currently being sold for this purpose. Subsequent studies conducted in commercial broiler houses have shown that chickens grown on alum-treated litter are significantly heavier than those grown on normal litter, with differences large enough to pay for the alum.

Dr. Moore received the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) 2001 Scientist of the Year Award for the Southern Plains Area. Moore's award is for research that has led to dramatic improvement in the environmental impact of manure from confined animal operations.
