Dr. Craig Coon

Dr. Craig Coon received his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University in 1966. After serving his country in Vietnam, he returned to Texas A&M and received his M.S. in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry in 1970 and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1973. Dr. Coon was nominated in 1973 by the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department as the Outstanding Graduate Student from Texas A&M University. Dr. Coon has been a faculty member involved in research, teaching, and extension at the University of Maryland, Washington State University, and the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Coon's research interests are nutrient utilization, environmental interactions with nutrition, feedstuff evaluation, and amino acid metabolism. Dr. Coon has been responsible for teaching Principles of Nutrition for undergraduates and Amino Acid and Protein Nutrition and Metabolism for graduate students. Dr. Coon was the recipient of two Sabbatical Quarter Leaves while at the University of Minnesota where he conducted nutrition research at the University of Reading in 1987 and at the Poultry Research Institute in Roslin Scotland in 1991. Dr. Coon is often invited to many international and national locations to speak on poultry nutrition. Dr. Coon was the 1994 recipient of the American Feed Industry Association Nutrition Research Award in Poultry Science and in 1996 was invited to give the 12th Clyde Eby Memorial lecture at North Carolina State University. Dr.Coon joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas in 1997 as the recipient of the Arkansas Poultry Federation Endowed Chair. Dr. Coon has shifted his research focus to broiler breeder nutrition with emphasis on nutrient partitioning for both meat gain and egg production.
