Dr. Walter Bottje

Dr. Bottje graduated with honors in 1976, receiving a B.S. degree in Zoology with a Chemistry minor from Eastern Illinois University. After receiving an M.S. from Southern Illinois University, he completed a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois prior to being hired at the University of Arkansas in 1985. Dr. Bottje developed a research program focused on antioxidants and toxicology with an NIH grant he received in 1987.

In 1995, Dr. Bottje became the Associate Director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science (CEPS) with a 30% administrative appointment. In June 2003, Dr. Bottje was named the Department Head and Director of the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science. In 2008, Dr. Bottje stepped back into a research and teaching position with the Center.

Dr. Bottje's current research focus is on the role that mitochondria play in the phenotypic expression of feed efficiency in broilers.  This research has been supported by grants from USDA-NRI and Cobb-Vantress, Inc. (Siloam Springs, AR).  Previous research emphasis was on the role of mitochondria in the pathophysiology of ascites (pulmonary hypertension syndrome).
