Dr. Lionel Barton

A native of Magnolia, Arkansas, Dr. Barton joined the UA faculty as Extension Poultry man in 1967 and retired in March 1995.

Dr. Barton served as project leader for a $909,000 grant from the Arkansas Energy Office for Development and operation of the Extension Broiler Energy Verification Unit where studies are conducted in four commercial-scale broiler houses. He has served in key leadership positions in recent years with the Central States Poultry Consortium, Western Regional Water Quality Project, and the Governor's Animal Waste Task Force. In 1987 he was awarded the Pfizer Poultry Science Extension Award for distinguished service to the poultry industry.

His many contributions in the area of nutrition include development of a computerized feed formulation program for microcomputers and recommendations for feeding poultry litter to cattle. In a project supported in part by a Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association grant, he conducted a definitive study of the effects of water quality on broiler performance. Dr. Barton is currently serving as the president of the Poultry Science Alumni organization.
